World’s First Global Museum Awards Launched to Save the Planet!

By Harshita Gupta

In a world facing big problems like climate change and youth struggles, museums are stepping up as heroes. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) just launched its first-ever award to cheer on spots that make a real difference for a better future. And guess who grabbed the top prize? The Barbados Museum & Historical Society, with a smart project that connects kids across oceans to tackle tough island issues.

Called “Shared Island Stories Between Scotland and the Caribbean: Transnational Youth Exchange,” this program brings young people from Barbados and Scotland together. They swap stories, learn about shared histories, and team up on real fixes for problems like rising seas eating away at coasts, fading cultural treasures, shaky economies, and risks facing at-risk teens. It’s not just talk, it’s hands-on action that builds skills, friendships, and hope for tomorrow’s leaders.

Over 130 museum projects from 60 countries entered the race. A team of seven global experts picked the winners based on how well they match the United Nations’ 17 goals for a sustainable world, covering people, planet, money, peace, and teamwork. The Barbados team’s idea stood out for blending fun learning with serious impact on island life.
Four other stars made the shortlist, showing the world is full of fresh ideas:

  • Ghent City Museum (STAM) in Belgium: Pushing eco-smart ways to run city history spots.
  • Museums Association of Namibia: Linking African heritage to green growth.
  • National Gallery of Victoria in Australia: Mixing art with nature protection.
  • Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art in Sarajevo: Healing communities through creative, earth-friendly exhibits.

The big reveal happened at ICOM’s 27th big meeting in Dubai, where leaders gathered to share tips on making museums greener. ICOM President Emma Nardi summed it up perfectly: “With threats like climate disasters and unfair societies all around us, museums can’t sit back. They must join the fight. This award honors places that step forward with bold ideas and real steps that work.”

This prize isn’t just a shiny trophy, it’s a call to action. ICOM plans to collect top stories like these into a free online toolkit, so every museum, big or small, can copy the magic. From cutting waste in exhibits to teaching kids about the planet, these wins prove culture spots can lead the green charge. As our world heats up and communities pull apart, stories like Barbados’ remind us: Change starts with connection. What’s your local museum doing to join in? Time to find out and get inspired.
