In a bold step toward cleaner seas and skies, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, often called VOC Port has signed a deal for its first all-electric tugboat. This isn’t just any boat; it’s a game-changer designed to pull massive ships while keeping the air fresh and free from harmful fumes. Based in Tuticorin, southern India, VOC Port is one of the country’s busiest hubs, handling everything from cargo to coastal trade. Now, it’s gearing up to swap out old-school diesel engines for cutting-edge green tech.
The new tug packs a punch with 60 tonnes of bollard pull, that’s the muscle needed to nudge giant vessels into place safely. Built by India’s own Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd., this electric powerhouse will run on batteries, zapping away up to 100% of the nasty emissions that diesel tugs belch out. And it’s not a one-off buy, the ₹385.76 crore deal covers running and upkeep for a full 15 years, ensuring smooth sailing long-term.
Why go green now? VOC Port is jumping on India’s nationwide push to clean up its ports under the Green Tug Transition Programme. Launched by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the plan aims to ditch diesel tugs for eco-alternatives like battery, green ammonia, or hydrogen power. It’s all tied to big promises India made at global climate talks, like the COP26 “Panchamrit” pledges. Those include hitting 500 GW of renewable energy, getting half our power from clean sources by 2030, and reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. Plus, it lines up with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision-2047, a roadmap for smarter, greener shipping.
Right now, VOC Port relies on three diesel tugs, one with 45 tonnes pull and two at 50 tonnes each. These workhorses get the job done, but they’re part of the pollution problem. The new electric tug will help phase them out gently, starting a smooth shift without disrupting daily ops. Delivery is set within two years, making VOC one of the first five major ports, alongside spots like Jawaharlal Nehru, Deendayal, New Mangalore, and Visakhapatnam, to kick off this eco-upgrade.
“It’s a proud moment for us,” shared Susanta Kumar Purohit, the port’s Chairperson and an IRSEE engineer. “Switching to clean energy isn’t just smart, it’s our duty. This tug will help us build a healthier planet while keeping our port humming efficiently.”
The perks? imagine fewer greenhouse gases floating into the atmosphere, quieter harbors for nearby communities, and a model for other ports worldwide. Hybrid tugs can already trim emissions by 25-35%, but full electrics like this one go all-in for maximum impact. As global trade booms, moves like this show how India’s ports are steering toward a sustainable future, one tug at a time.
This order isn’t alone; it’s part of a bigger wave. With climate change knocking louder every year, ports everywhere are racing to adapt. VOC Port’s choice could inspire smaller harbors too, proving that going green doesn’t mean slowing down. Stay tuned, as the tug hits the water, we’ll see just how much cleaner our coastlines can shine. What’s next for green shipping? The waves are just warming up.
