Imagine turning your backyard into a mini forest – all for free! That’s the sweet deal New Castle County is offering Delaware residents this fall. As part of a big push to cool down our planet, the county is handing out hundreds of young trees at two fun outdoor spots. It’s all about growing more green spaces to battle rising temperatures and cleaner air for everyone.
This isn’t just any tree party, it’s the third round of the Tree for Every Delawarean Initiative, or TEDI for short. Teaming up with state experts from natural resources and agriculture, the county wants to plant one million trees across Delaware by 2030. So far, they’ve already given away over 850 saplings, and this weekend’s events aim to add 200 more to the mix.
Mark your calendars: The first giveaway hits Glasgow Park on Friday, September 26, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. If you miss that, head to Rockwood Park on Friday, October 3, same time slot. Trees go to the early birds on a first-come, first-served basis, so beat the rush!
What kinds of trees are up for grabs? Think tough, local favorites that thrive in the area: sweetbay magnolia for pretty blooms, southern magnolia for that classic shade, red maple for fall colors, white oak for wildlife homes, persimmon for tasty fruit, river birch for streamside charm, red cedar for year-round green, white dogwood for spring flowers, and eastern redbud for early purple pops. These aren’t fancy imports, they’re native picks that help bees, birds, and butterflies while soaking up rainwater and cutting energy bills with their shade.
Anyone living in Delaware can join in, no fancy membership needed. Just show up as a local resident, and you’re good to go. Why bother planting a tree? Beyond looking great, these green heroes fight climate change by trapping carbon, clean up dirty air, hold soil in place during storms, and even chill your home in summer to save on AC costs. It’s a small step with huge wins for our neighborhoods and the whole state, tying right into Delaware’s smart plan to tackle global warming head-on.
Don’t let this chance slip away, fall is prime planting time, and your new tree buddy could be growing strong by next spring. Head to the parks, grab your freebie, and join the green revolution. Delaware’s future looks brighter, one leaf at a time! For more details, check the county’s site or that handy registration link.
