Thailand is turning heads in sustainable travel with a bold innovation, electric ferries that glide above the water like airplanes. On October 6, 2025, Seudamgo, a local ferry operator under Leopard Transportation Co., signed a major deal with Sweden’s Candela to bring 10 state-of-the-art P-12 hydrofoil boats to Thailand.
These ferries aren’t your typical rides. They’re quiet, emission-free, and ultra-efficient, designed to reduce pollution while promoting eco-tourism across Thailand’s beautiful islands.
Just Imagine, gliding 20 nautical miles from the mainland to Koh Kood’s stunning beaches in just 40 minutes. Traveling at over 25 knots, the ferries lift above the waves using advanced hydrofoil wings, giving passengers a smooth, seasickness-free journey. No noise, no fumes, just ocean breeze and breathtaking views.
The “Business” edition can seat up to 20 passengers in luxurious comfort. Unlike old fuel-burning speedboats, these electric marvels use 80% less energy, produce zero emissions, and barely disturb the water, a big win for marine life and coral reefs around Koh Kood.
“This is a total game-changer,” said Surachai Suwanthanakul, CEO of Leopard Transportation. “No more emissions, oil spills, or noisy engines. It’s a smooth, peaceful ride where seasickness is history.”
Candela’s founder and CEO, Gustav Hasselskog, echoed the excitement:
“Thailand is embracing the future of water travel. Replacing old boats with electric flyers helps protect paradise destinations like Koh Kood for generations to come.”
This innovation aligns perfectly with Thailand’s national sustainability goals, as the Transport Ministry continues investing in eco-friendly infrastructure. Candela is even setting up its largest international hub in Thailand, paving the way for more high-tech ferries to operate across the region.
Globally, the speedboat industry is also shifting gears. Valued at $4.5 billion in 2024, it’s projected to reach $7.2 billion by 2033, driven by AI, smart sensors, and clean tech. Thailand is quickly positioning itself as Southeast Asia’s leader in sustainable marine innovation.
For travelers, this means one thing, guilt-free island adventures. Visiting Koh Kood’s white sands and turquoise waters no longer comes at the planet’s expense. With Candela’s electric flying ferries, Thailand’s seas are set to become greener, cleaner, and faster than ever.
