A playful seal pup spots a bright plastic ring sailing across the waves. Excited, it darts after the toy, unaware of the danger ahead. In a heartbeat, the ring slips over its neck. What once looked like harmless fun becomes a deadly trap, tightening as the seal grows, cutting into its skin like a noose. Sadly, this isn’t a scene from a film but a heartbreaking reality for seals along the UK’s coastline.
Leading the fight against this silent threat is the Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary in Lincolnshire. For nearly 20 years, their dedicated team has cared for seals wounded by discarded flying rings. Though the number of cases has been small, each one tells a devastating story of suffering. “These rings never break down,” explains Chloe Drew, the sanctuary’s director. “As the seal grows, the plastic cuts deeper, leaving horrific injuries and in many cases, it’s fatal.” Even when a seal survives, infections often spread rapidly, turning a single entanglement into a life-threatening emergency.
Yet amidst the struggle, there’s hope. Everyday heroes like Leanne Havell, a veteran beach cleaner at Sutton-on-Sea, have been making a remarkable difference. For more than a decade, Leanne has worked tirelessly to clear litter from the shoreline, helping reduce the number of injured seals found along the coast. “Without community efforts like hers, the sanctuary would face an overwhelming crisis,” Chloe notes.
Campaigns calling for a frisbees ban are now gaining ground in areas such as Norfolk, Cornwall, and Swansea. Conservationists believe that with stronger awareness, responsible play alternatives, and local action, these deadly toys can finally be tossed out for good, giving seals a safer ocean to call home.
