Imagine boarding a plane knowing the fuel powering your flight comes from captured carbon dioxide instead of fossil fuels. That future feels closer thanks to OxCCU, an Oxford-based startup that just won a major eco award for its groundbreaking work in sustainable aviation.
OxCCU took home the 2026 Startups 100 Sustainability Award, recognizing its smart approach to cutting emissions in the aviation industry. The company also landed fourth place in the overall Startups 100 Index. This win shines a spotlight on how fresh ideas can tackle one of travel’s biggest environmental challenges, plane emissions.
Founded in 2021, OxCCU focuses on making sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that’s cleaner and cheaper. Their clever method mixes captured CO₂ with green hydrogen using a special iron catalyst. Unlike older processes that need multiple steps, OxCCU does it in one go. This cuts costs, wastes less, and helps produce fuel that works just like regular jet fuel but with far lower carbon impact.
At their OX1 demonstration plant at London Oxford Airport, the team has already run the process for over 1,000 hours. The results show high efficiency and strong potential for real-world use. It’s exciting proof that this technology can scale up.
Late last year, OxCCU raised £20.75 million in Series B funding. This money will help them build bigger plants and grow their team. Their goal is bold: produce 10,000 tonnes of SAF each year before 2030. That’s enough fuel for several long-haul flights, like transatlantic trips on a Boeing 787.
CEO and co-founder Andrew Symes shared the excitement: “Winning this award shows the progress we’ve made. With fresh funding, a new demonstration plant in the works, and a growing team, we’re ready to prove this technology at larger scale and help shape cleaner aviation fuel for the future.”
Zohra Huda, praised the achievement: “OxCCU’s work offers a real, scalable way to lower emissions in aviation and chemicals. It shows how science and business can team up to fight climate change.” Beyond planes, OxCCU sees their fuel helping other industries like chemicals and plastics shift away from fossil fuels. Every step reduces our reliance on oil and supports a more sustainable world.
This award isn’t just a trophy, it’s a sign that green innovation is gaining speed. As more startups like OxCCU push boundaries, sustainable flying could become the normal way to travel. For anyone passionate about protecting our planet, stories like this bring real hope.
