On March 28, 2025, Myanmar and some parts of Thailand was struck by a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake, causing widespread devastation. The shaking was felt across eastern India, parts of China, Cambodia, and Laos.

Key Points:

  • Epicenter and Aftershocks: The initial quake occurred northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at 12:50 PM local time, followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock and several smaller tremors.
  • Casualties: As of March 29, over 1,000 deaths have been reported in Myanmar and 2,376 injured and 30 missing. In Thailand, at least 10 people lost there lives, primarily due to the collapse of a high-rise under construction near Bangkok’s Chatuchak market, with up to 100 workers feared trapped.
  • Structural Damage: In Mandalay, Myanmar, numerous buildings collapsed and historic Ava Bridge over the Irravaddy River fell into the water. In Bangkok a high rise under-construction building, collapsed, resulting in multiple deaths.
  • International Response: Myanmar’s military junta issued a rare appeal for international aid, requesting assistance from “any country, any organization.” India responded promptly, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing readiness to assist and dispatching 15 tonnes of relief supplies via the Indian Air Force. The United States, European Union, and other nations have also pledged support.

Rescue Efforts:

Emergency teams are working tirelessly to locate and rescue survivors amid the rubble. However, ongoing civil unrest in Myanmar has severely weakened emergency services, complicating relief operations.

This Myanmar-Thailand earthquake underscores the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and highlights the critical need for robust disaster preparedness and international cooperation in times of crisis.
