On July 30, 2025, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) launched its second version of GeoWebFace, a public online map application. This improved system helps people explore Michigan’s non‑renewable geological resources, like oil wells, gas wells, and mining sites.

The original GeoWebFace had become outdated and hard to support, so EGLE rebuilt it using ESRI’s Experience Builder software. The new design is cleaner and faster, and lets users add data from EGLE’s Open Data site or their own files.

Inside GeoWebFace, users can view permitted hydrocarbon development wells, gas storage wells, mineral wells, old and new mining sites, groundwater wells, wetlands, geological layers like bedrock and quaternary geology, and sand dune areas under regulation. The map connects with EGLE’s DataMiner tool so users can see detailed well files, logs, and oil and gas production data.

The tool includes interactive functions: filter or search by location and attribute, change base map styles, measure distances, adjust layer transparency, select items to view details, and export data. Users can even add new data layers via URL or upload. EGLE staff say user feedback has been positive. For comments or help, people can contact EGLE on their official mail.

GeoWebFace is maintained by EGLE’s Geologic Resources Management Division. It’s meant for planning, education, and general resource exploration, not for legal or property boundary decisions. The data is provided “as is,” and users should respect property rights and applicable laws before taking any action.
