Argentina Earthquake-Tsunami: On May 2, 2025, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck the Drake Passage, located between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica. The quake occurred at 9:58 AM local time and was centered approximately 219 kilometers south of Ushuaia, Argentina, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
In response, Chilean authorities issued a tsunami warning for the Magallanes region and parts of the Chilean Antarctic territory. Residents in coastal areas were advised to evacuate to higher ground, at least 30 meters above sea level. Over 1,700 people were evacuated, including individuals from Puerto Williams and Puerto Natales. In Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego province, water activities and navigation in the Beagle Channel were temporarily suspended as a precaution.
Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage in either country. The tsunami alert was later lifted after assessments indicated no substantial tsunami had occurred. Chilean President Gabriel Boric emphasized the importance of following emergency protocols and assured the public that all necessary resources were available to address the situation.
This event highlights the seismic activity common in the region due to the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Pacific Ocean. Authorities continue to monitor the area for aftershocks and have urged residents to remain vigilant.
