COWA’s Green Border Initiative Raises Over N500M for a Cleaner Future

By Harshita Gupta

Imagine, a group of determined women, armed with shovels and big dreams, turning dusty border towns into lush green havens. That’s exactly what happened recently when the Customs Officers Wives Association (COWA) rolled out their exciting new Sustainability and Green Border Initiative right in the heart of Zone C, Nigeria. It’s not just talk, they’ve already scooped up more than N500 million to make it all real, proving that small steps can spark massive change for our planet.

If you’ve ever worried about the air we breathe or the forests vanishing around us, this story is a breath of fresh air. COWA, the supportive network for wives of customs officers, kicked things off at the bustling Customs Area 1 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. But they’re not stopping there, their sights are set on key border spots like Seme, Idiroko, and Illela. These often-overlooked areas face tough challenges, oil spills scarring the Niger Delta, rising pollution, and climate threats that hit hardest where people need hope most.

At the heart of it all is a simple yet powerful idea- Plant trees, recycle waste, and build skills that last. Since kicking off in October 2025, these amazing women have already dug in and planted 862 trees. But that’s just the start, they’re aiming for a whopping 15,000 more! Imagine rows of sturdy mangroves and fruit trees shading communities, sucking up harmful gases, and even providing fresh veggies from backyard gardens. It’s hands-on stuff, sorting trash for recycling, learning to turn waste into wealth, and chatting with locals about why every green leaf counts.

What makes this even more inspiring? The cash flow. A generous N500 million donation from freight forwarders in Customs Zone C lit the fire, showing how businesses and everyday heroes can team up for good. “If you plant trees, you plant hope, and anything COWA plants grows,” beamed Mrs. Kikelomo Adewale Adeniyi, the national president and the brain behind this green wave. As the wife of the Comptroller General of Customs, she’s no stranger to big ideas, and she’s already sharing them on global stages, like her recent talk in Brazil.

Echoing her vibe, ACG Mohammed Kamal, the zonal coordinator, called it “a testament to protecting the land that shelters us and the future of our kids.” And Dr. Mrs. Bolanle Balogun, chair of COWA’s Federal Operations Unit in Zone C, summed it up perfectly: “From recycling to fighting pollution, this project’s got it all on the green side.” Guests from shipping companies, terminal operators, and even Rivers State officials joined the party, nodding along as the governor’s rep, Mr. Allwell Chinedu Okereuku, pledged state backing for a cleaner tomorrow.

This isn’t fancy boardroom stuff, it’s real people making real waves. By teaching women skills like eco-research and smart waste handling, COWA is flipping the script on old ways. No more just sewing circles; now it’s about leading the charge against deforestation and emissions. Communities are buzzing: Families are starting home gardens, kids are learning to nurture saplings, and borders that once felt forgotten are blooming with possibility.

Looking ahead, the momentum’s building. Plans are in motion to spread this magic to more spots, like Owerri, with grassroots workshops and fresh partnerships. It’s all about that ripple effect, one tree at a time, turning challenges into chances for a healthier, happier Nigeria.

In a world racing toward greener days, stories like this remind us: Change starts with us, right in our own backyards (or borders). Who’s ready to grab a shovel? If COWA can rally N500 million and plant hope across zones, imagine what we could all do together. Stay tuned, these women are just getting warmed up.
