New Coalition Strengthens Animal Rescue in Central Missouri!

By Harshita Gupta

In rural parts of central Missouri, many animal shelters are overcrowded and short on space. When kennels fill up, even friendly dogs and cats can be at risk. One woman is working to change that by bringing the community together in a new way.

Tana Phillips, a lifelong animal lover from Wellsville who now lives in Mexico, Missouri, started the MID MO Animal Rescue Coalition (MID MO ARC) on January 1, 2026. Her goal is simple: help rural shelters in seven counties connect pets with people ready to adopt. By doing this, shelters can free up space and animals get a better chance at finding loving homes.

Before the coalition officially launched, Tana was already making an impact. In December 2025, she shared social media posts highlighting nine dogs at the City of Mexico Animal Shelter. These dogs had medical or behavior challenges and were running out of time because the shelter needed space for new animals. One post was shared more than 700 times, and by the end of the month, every dog had found a home.

That success pushed her forward. In the first week of MID MO ARC, Tana and her friend Tessah Shaw helped seven more dogs find safety. With experience from volunteering at local shelters, Tana understands how hard it is for small, rural shelters to manage limited staff, funding, and adopters.

MID MO ARC doesn’t operate like a traditional shelter. Instead, it works as a support network. Tana shares pets online, connects them with adopters or rescue groups, and sometimes helps with vet care. She focuses on animals that are harder to place locally, helping shelters stay balanced and care for all animals better.

The effort also supports sustainability. Choosing adoption over buying pets reduces the number of animals in shelters, lowers strain on resources, and creates long-term, community-based solutions. It’s about responsible pet care that helps animals, people, and the environment.

Tana hopes to grow the coalition by adding local leaders in each county and is looking for volunteers, especially drivers to help transport animals to new homes. Her message is simple, when you see an animal in need, step up and help where you can. Even small actions like sharing a post, fostering, or volunteering can make a big difference. This new coalition proves that when people come together, real change can happen, one rescued animal at a time.
